West Jordan was given its name by the pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Its name was derived from the Jordan River. West Jordan was considered the land west of the Jordan River, thus they called it West Jordan.
West Jordan was settled in 1848 by those pioneers that gave it its name. Among the first settlers of West Jordan was a man named Archibald Gardner. He built one of the first sawmills in the area. His legacy can still be seen today in West Jordan. "His collection of mills and houses, now historic, have been renovated into a specialty shopping district known as Gardner Village."
